Library

Come visit the Library!

Welcome to the new year at Chelwood!  I would like to introduce myself, I am Lisa Herndon and this will be my sixth year as the Chelwood Librarian. I have been here at Chelwood for the last twelve years as a teacher in both 4th and 5th grade and even one year in 3rd grade. I became the Literacy teacher about six years ago, and just this last summer, I am now endorsed as a Librarian. The Library is always changing and I invite anyone to come on in and take a look.  If you are interested in volunteering at the school, think about maybe spending some time in the Library.  Check out the schedule and you could even schedule yourself in the Library at the same time that your student is here for pull outs. There is always something to do.  You could check in books, read stories to a class, listen while students read to you, help shelve books, the list is endless. The Library is in need of technology, so I am asking that if you have upgraded your iPod, Kindle Fire, or even iPad, we could use your old one here in our listening center, so please bring them on in. This year, as always, the Library will be joining 'The Battle of the Books' . Click on the link to read more about this event. This event is geared toward the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades, so please check out the book list, pick your first book, and START READING. I will be reading these books as well so that I can be familiar enough to be able to ask questions about each book.  Whew! We better get started right away!  For Kinder through 3rd grade, we have a Caldecott Book Club.  Every year the Caldecott Medal is given to outstanding children's illustrated books. These books are MY favorite to read. Once students have read at least 15 Caldecott Medal of Honor books, they bring their reading lists to me. The students will receive a certificate, a round of applause from their class, and their name on the Caldecott Readers bulletin board in the library. Lastly, check out the Land of Enchantment web site to find out the list of books for this year, as well as past winners. They make great reads all year long.http://www.loebookaward.com/. We will participate in voting for our favorites in April. I almost forgot, make sure to browse the links on this page.  We have The World Book Online which will help in research for research papers, powerpoints, and even if your student is just curious about a particular subject.  Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have ANY questions, I am happy to help in any way I can.  Have a GREAT year, and I hope to see you in the LIBRARY!    Lisa Herndon
